From 23 to 26 March 2026, Nairobi hosted the\u00a0<\/span>International Maternal Newborn Health Conference (IMNHC)<\/a><\/span><\/b>, affirming itself among the leading global platforms for maternal and neonatal health dialogue. The event brought together over\u00a0<\/span>1,800 participants from more than 87 countries<\/span><\/b>, including\u00a0<\/span>40 official government delegations<\/span><\/b>, marking a significant convergence of institutions, healthcare professionals,\u00a0researchers\u00a0and international\u00a0organisations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The conference\u00a0provided\u00a0an opportunity to share results, tackle ongoing\u00a0challenges\u00a0and outline new strategies to improve care for mothers and newborns, especially in the most fragile contexts. The international community\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0<\/span>growing awareness<\/span><\/b>: achieving global goals now requires a qualitative leap, not just expanding access to services.<\/span><\/p>\n

A\u00a0Programme\u00a0Designed to Turn Evidence into Action<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

The IMNHC 2026\u00a0programme\u00a0alternated technical sessions,\u00a0workshops\u00a0and discussions, aiming to translate scientific evidence into tangible and applicable solutions in maternal-neonatal wards. The\u00a0<\/span>quality of care<\/span><\/b>\u00a0strongly\u00a0emerged\u00a0as a central theme.<\/span><\/p>\n

In many countries, access to healthcare services has gradually increased, but this is no longer enough. It is the quality of care that makes the difference between survival and loss, between positive outcomes and preventable complications. Therefore, it is necessary to invest in\u00a0<\/span>high standards\u00a0of care<\/span><\/b>, continuous quality improvement, clinical\u00a0supervision\u00a0and the development of healthcare workers\u2019 skills.<\/span><\/p>\n

Within this framework, the need to\u00a0<\/span>rethink funding models<\/span><\/b>\u00a0was also discussed, moving beyond purely reporting-driven logics to direct resources towards real, measurable outcomes for mothers and newborns. This implies a strategic vision that includes strengthening health systems, access to essential\u00a0commodities\u00a0and support for innovation, so that effective solutions can be sustained and\u00a0scaled up\u00a0over time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Collaboration, Data and People at the Centre of Care Systems<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

Another key message from the conference concerns collaboration. The principle of\u00a0<\/span>\u201cone plan, one budget, one report\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0is more relevant than ever: to generate real impact, it is necessary to overcome fragmentation and isolated approaches, working in a coordinated manner and aligning strategies,\u00a0resources\u00a0and responsibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

The reflection, however, went beyond technical and\u00a0organisational\u00a0aspects, placing people at the\u00a0centre. A fundamental role was\u00a0recognised\u00a0not only for healthcare workers, but also for families. Care systems must\u00a0<\/span>be redesigned in a more inclusive way<\/span><\/b>: on\u00a0one\u00a0hand, supporting skills,\u00a0motivation\u00a0and ability of professionals, and on the other, valuing the role of families as\u00a0integral\u00a0part of the care pathway, from prevention to\u00a0assistance. Without supported professionals and involved, aware families, no transformation can be truly sustainable.<\/span><\/p>\n

Africa as a Driver of Change<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

Finally, IMNHC 2026 reaffirmed a crucial\u00a0paradigm shift:\u00a0<\/span>Africa is no longer a passive recipient of aid<\/span><\/b>, but an active protagonist in driving change.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this context fits the work of the partnership\u00a0<\/span>EWENE \u2013 Every Woman Every Newborn Everywhere<\/a><\/span><\/b>, which brought together national delegations for a structured moment of dialogue and joint work. The\u00a0objective\u00a0was to reflect on the main lessons from the conference, adapt them to different country contexts,\u00a0identify\u00a0key gaps in implementation and system, and define\u00a0<\/span>three to five medium-term strategic priorities<\/span><\/b>, together with related technical\u00a0assistance\u00a0needs.<\/span><\/p>\n

The message that\u00a0emerged\u00a0is clear: aligning to scale up what works, supporting measurable\u00a0changes\u00a0and strengthening country leadership is essential to achieve together the goals set by EWENE.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Paolo Chiesi Foundation: A Space for Dialogue and Innovation<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

Within this dynamic context, the Paolo Chiesi Foundation played an active role as\u00a0<\/span>facilitator of the session with African country delegations<\/span><\/b>, promoting strategic dialogue on medium-term priorities for maternal and neonatal health and\u00a0facilitating\u00a0the identification of specific technical\u00a0assistance\u00a0needs. The Foundation also stood out as a point of contact for several international donors and funders,\u00a0consolidating\u00a0collaboration among institutions,\u00a0partners\u00a0and field operators.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, its booth in the exhibitors\u2019 area became a continuous exchange point throughout the conference: an\u00a0<\/span>open space for dialogue<\/span><\/b>, where healthcare professionals, institutions and international partners met to share experiences, discuss daily challenges in neonatal wards and consider\u00a0possible future\u00a0collaborations.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most explored topics at the booth was the\u00a0<\/span>NEST Model (Neonatal Essentials for Survival and Thriving)<\/a><\/span><\/b>, an approach designed to improve\u00a0stabilisation\u00a0and care for critically ill newborns through essential tools, ongoing\u00a0training\u00a0and clear\u00a0organisation\u00a0of clinical pathways. The idea behind the model is simple but powerful: in resource-limited settings, effectiveness does not depend on the complexity of solutions, but on their\u00a0<\/span>immediacy,\u00a0adaptability\u00a0and sustainability<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The NEST Model is developed and funded by the Paolo Chiesi Foundation and implemented by local and international partners, combining\u00a0<\/span>interventions tailored to the real needs of wards<\/span><\/b>\u00a0with constant support to clinical staff. Thanks to this collaboration, clearer and more structured protocols have been introduced, the quality of neonatal\u00a0stabilisation\u00a0has been\u00a0improved\u00a0and care pathways have become more reliable from the very first hours of the child\u2019s life.<\/span><\/p>\n

The immersive experience offered by virtual reality headsets enabled participants to visit\u00a0<\/span>the neonatal ward of Ngozi Regional Hospital in Burundi<\/a><\/span><\/b>, making visible concrete solutions already applied in the field and encouraging direct discussion on care practices.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking Beyond the Conference<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

The IMNHC 2026 confirmed that maternal and neonatal health is a collective responsibility, requiring listening,\u00a0coordination\u00a0and the ability to turn evidence into concrete action. The legacy of the conference is clear: progress depends on the\u00a0<\/span>strength of partnerships<\/span><\/b>, mutual\u00a0trust\u00a0and adapting solutions to different contexts.
