From <\/span>May 16 to 21<\/span><\/b>, the<\/span> Chiesi Foundation<\/span><\/b> took part in the <\/span><\/span>2025 ATS International Conference in San Francisco<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/a>, the leading global event organized by the <\/span>American Thoracic Society<\/span><\/b> and dedicated to <\/span>pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine<\/span><\/b>.<\/span> Each year, this conference gathers <\/span><\/span>14,000 healthcare professionals and researchers<\/span><\/b> from around the world<\/span>, to explore and discuss the latest scientific findings and innovations in patient care.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

This year\u2019s conference has been a key opportunity for the Chiesi Foundation to bring visibility to <\/span>complex health challenges <\/span><\/b>and <\/span>innovative solutions<\/span><\/b> related to the <\/span>management of <\/span><\/span>chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) <\/span><\/b>across the <\/span>Global South.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Strengthening Global Partnerships<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

Another valuable moment to reflect on key global health initiatives, has been the participation in a high-level meeting with the representatives from the <\/span>ATS<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the meeting, we had the opportunity to exchange insights and ideas on new initiatives supported by the Foundation, especially regarding our ongoing partnership with the <\/span>Pan-African Thoracic Society <\/span><\/b>(PATS)<\/span> in support of <\/span>MECOR Africa<\/span><\/b>, a program dedicated to building local research and clinical capacity in respiratory health. The session also marked an important milestone: the <\/span><\/span>formalization of the Chiesi Foundation\u2019s donation to<\/span> <\/span><\/b>ATS MECOR<\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a> Southeast Asia<\/span><\/span><\/b>, further reinforcing our commitment to supporting health workforce development in underserved regions. Both initiatives reflect the importance of<\/span> investing in the training of local professionals to achieving long-term, sustainable improvements in care delivery and health equity in the Global South.<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

We would like to thank <\/span>Delia Naughton<\/span><\/b>, Director of ATS Philanthropy; <\/span>Cristina Braz<\/span><\/b>, Managing Director of Membership Engagement and Global Health; and <\/span>Jadir Oliveira<\/span><\/b>, Senior Manager for Global Health; for their valuable contributions to the meeting and their shared vision of impactful action.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, we extend our warmest congratulations to Dr. <\/span>Raed A. Dweik<\/span><\/b>, newly appointed <\/span>President of the American Thoracic Society.<\/span><\/b> We look forward to continued collaboration under his leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n

The participation in the 2025 ATS Conference<\/span> reaffirmed our belief in the power of international collaboration: <\/span>addressing global health challenges requires shared commitment, localized solutions and sustainable change.<\/span><\/b> The conference served not only as a space to exchange scientific knowledge and innovations, but also as a catalyst for action, reinforcing our commitment to <\/span>equitable access to healthcare for In addition to our public contribution, the 2025 ATS Conference also offered <\/span><\/span>a strategic opportunity for internal collaboration<\/span><\/b>: the Chiesi Foundation convened <\/span>the third meeting with its GASP Technical Advisory Group<\/span><\/b>, a multidisciplinary team of four healthcare experts to provide strategic guidance to our work in chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) management across the Global South.<\/span><\/p>\n

The session focused on <\/span>evaluating and refining the implementation of the GASP<\/span><\/b> (Global Access to Sustainable Pulmonology) Model in Peru and Guyana. With the support of the TAG members, the Foundation identified <\/span>new opportunities to enhance the program effectiveness and ensure local sustainability.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

We are deeply grateful to our TAG members MD, PhD <\/span>William Checkley<\/span> <\/span><\/b>and PhD <\/span>Laura Nicolaou<\/span><\/b> from Johns Hopkins University; MD, PhD <\/span>Refiloe Masekela<\/span><\/b> from Panafrican Thoracic Society; and MD, CM, FRCPC <\/span>Robert Levy<\/span><\/b> from<\/span> University of British Columbia<\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a>, for their continued guidance in helping us support high-quality respiratory care. <\/span><\/p>\n

We would also like to extend our congratulations to Dr. Refiloe Masekela on receiving the<\/span> World Lung Health Award<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a>, a testament to her impactful work in advancing global lung health, especially through research, care, education, and advocacy aimed at reducing health disparities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Studio Talk: <\/span><\/b>\u201cQuality Management of Chronic Respiratory Diseases in Resource-Constrained Countries\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n

During the conference, a dedicated <\/span>Studio Talk<\/span><\/b>, titled \u201c<\/span>Quality Management of Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRDs) in Resource-Constrained Countries<\/span><\/i>\u201d was held on <\/span>May 18<\/span><\/b> at the Moscone Convention Center.<\/span> The event gathered <\/span>a diverse panel of global health experts<\/span><\/b> to explore barriers and solutions related to managing CRDs, such as <\/span>asthma<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>COPD,<\/span><\/b> in <\/span>low- and middle-income countries.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Chaired by <\/span>Dr. Laura Nicolaou<\/span><\/b>, Assistant Professor at <\/span>Johns Hopkins University<\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a>, and <\/span>Dr. Mario Scuri<\/span><\/b>, Chiesi Foundation GASP Technical Advisor, the session focused on three central challenges: <\/span>adapting international clinical guidelines<\/span><\/b>, like <\/span>Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA)<\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a> and <\/span>Global Initiative for COPD (GOLD)<\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a>, to local realities; <\/span>overcoming systemic barriers<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>such as limited funding, lack of political will, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and lack of human resources; and <\/span>leveraging the role of the philanthropic sector<\/span><\/b> in supporting healthcare initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n

The symposium featured four experts who led insightful presentations – each of them addressing a critical perspective of CRDs crisis in different underserved regions:<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. William Checkley<\/span><\/b> (MD, PhD), Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, explored the difficulty of applying international strategies for managing chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) – particularly COPD – in low-and middle-income countries, highlighting the need for LMIC-specific guidelines to ensure cost-effective prevention, diagnosis, and management of CRDs in these settings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Refiloe Masekela <\/span><\/b>(MD, PhD), President of<\/span> Pan African Thoracic Society (PATS)<\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a>, <\/span>focused on the challenges of establishing high-quality care programs for respiratory non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in sub-Saharan Africa, addressing key issues including: workforce development, diagnostics, access to affordable medicines, research and policy implementation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Sundeep Salvi<\/span> <\/span><\/b>(MD), President of<\/span> Pulmocare Research and Education Foundation (PURE)<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/a>, <\/span>examined access barriers to care for CRDs<\/span>, outlining the key factors such as shortage of trained personnel, cost of medications, and cultural beliefs that delay diagnosis and treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Massimo Salvadori<\/span><\/b>,<\/span> Chiesi Foundation Coordinator, illustrated <\/span>how philanthropic organizations can act as drivers of systemic change<\/span> <\/span><\/b>by supporting local programs with flexible funding, technical assistance, and long-term partnerships. Case studies from Latin America, Africa, and Asia demonstrated the effective implementation of the Chiesi Foundation\u2019s<\/span> GASP (Global Access to Sustainable Pulmonology) Model<\/u><\/span><\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

These talks offered valuable<\/span> insights into how international best practices can be adapted to local realities <\/span><\/b>and<\/span> how sustainable change can be achieved through international collaboration and authentic partnerships <\/span><\/b>across sectors and borders.<\/span><\/p>\n
